"Chapters of Decay" reviews

"Loud motherfuckers right here. LOUD MOTHERFUCKERS. The first time I checked out their rehearsals when it surfaced the worldwide interwebs a few months ago, I got myself a boner. The chemistry among Jamie, Brian, Ryan, and Wilmer results to chaotic and crusty goregrind that would irritate your next door neighbor if you carelessly blast their music on maximum volume.

Chapters of Decay clocks in for approximately ten to fifteen minutes; simply ear raping brutality from start to finish. Some insider info for you music freaks: their drummer Ryan, kicks maximum ass (check out his other bands Pus Vomit and Tsimpayne). I got to smoke with this dude long ago and he got some iron lungs to beat yo. Jamie, Gangrene’s founder and only original member, is a cult on his own being one of the more prominent figures in the local diy scene and is the owner of two sick food joints (Sebo Pacific & Grind House). He also got his own brand of clothing line going on called Splatter Clothing and is the editor-in chief of the grinding fanzine known as Guttural Sickness. One sicko entrepreneur that knows his shit too well. \m/ \m/

Definitely one of those bands to check out from the Philippines.
Heard they’re releasing some material on wax, check out their website and keep your eyes and ears tuned: ps: favorite track: Surgical Atrocities"

Review by Good Guys Go Grind
My dear friend what do you know about asian gore scene? Not much? The same for me, hehehe)) And that's why today we will listen the last work from Philippines Gangrene. For my opinion Chapters of Decay is their best work. Although it`s just well re-recorded "Reek Of Pestilence" (which was raw as fuck, ahahah). So lets talk a little bit about this creepy artwork.

This art was made by Tremor (freaky and dark illustrator from Indonesia)... And it`s seems to me this theme is pretty close to "the Thing" movie. It`s looks very similar to alien mutant from that film (by maybe it`s only my sick imagiantion? who knows? :))

As for the noise, I guess we need to dig in to it for maximum. For first looks we got here a pretty usual gore. Low and raw sound, pitchshifted vocals and good blast beats and "tupa-tupa" beats. But lets listen closely. The sound is like a mud and disgustingly and slowly crawls under your skin, haha!) Guitar riffs are so primitive but they sounds really good and powerful. The bass guitar has a deep distorted and low roar (which is really sick and nice). Drums are not so emphatic (just try to understand me, beats are good but not a briliant). As for the vocals it`s a little bit stange. It`s a little bit high for pitchshifted stuff. But surely it`s good and reminded me old, good Oxidised Razor style.

Interview at Culture Shock Zine

Interview by Janraw R. Adriano / Culture Shock Zine
Answered by Jamie Perez

1. kailan na buo itong bandang gangrene
The band formed in back in the year 2014 when a band that myself and Brian were doing called Phlegm Thrower disbanded. Other members of the band also does various projects too; Gunshot Wounds, Tsimpayne, Kapre and Pus Vomit. I also got other projects as well; Herpes (Gore/Noise), Narcolepsy (Harsh Noise), Splatter Project, Splatter Clothing and Guttural Sickness Zine.

2. sino sino ang miembro ng band
Four Sick fucks playing a disgusting slab of crusty Goregrind.

Jamie - Vocals, Brian - Guitars, Ryan - Drums,Wilmer - Bass

3. anu ang influence ng band
The list would be way too long because there are so many great bands that We love. As for gore/grind Last Days Of Humanity, Dead Infection, Regurgitate, Grossmember, Insect Warfare, Repulsion, Deche Charge, Terrorizer and Malignant Tumour. I would say those are the core influences but some songs have different influences too. Other major influences would be Disrupt, 7 Minutes of Nausea, Sorethroat and Warsore. We all like similar kinds of Grindcore, Goregrind, Crust, Powerviolence, Sludge and Death Metal but there are definite difference in our tastes as well. For example it would probably surprise a lot of people to find out that I enjoy a lot of Country/Bluegrass music and some other things that have nothing to do with goregrind.

4. kailan kayo maglalabas ng E.P. or album
We have excreted the "Surgical Atrocities" (2014) and "Reek Of Pestilence" (2016) demos and the "Chapters Of Decay" EP (2017)
We are currently working in several splits that are planned to be released later this year, with bands such as Haggus, Meatal Ulcer, Proctalgia, Noise Conspiracy Project and Repugnant.

5. anu ang mga activities ng band
Aside from playing in the band, we enjoy travelling alot. We have always been fond of new adventures and discoveries. Me and Ryan together with other sick fucks did a long distance self contained Bikepacking trip from Cavite to Cagayan de Oro last October 2014. 1,757.2 Kilometers in 28 Days. We really love to experience the cultures from the different regions we visit and take advantage of the many other outdoor activities that will present themselves along the way. There is just so much to visit and explore but time and circumstances make it challenging as taking trips can be expensive.  We have to think of other ways to see the world, one kilometer at a time. Pedal to the metal!!!

6. saang gig kayo nkatugtug
A few newer venues have popped up now to take its place, in particular one called Darkside Bar located in Malate, Manila. They're doing really well and have had some great shows there, Gangrene's debut show was in that bar and had a great turnout!
We haven't had a chance to play outside the Philippines, maybe after we record the new materials and get it out there. We might have something going on this 2017!

7. anung mga plano..
We've got a bunch more songs in the works, i think around 5 at the moment, but we're really taking our time with them to try and improve the sound and add in some d-beat/crustcore and powerviolence influences. We like to mix it up and bring that pitchshifted vocals together with different things.

8. last question anu msasabi mo sa eksena d2 sa manila..
I have to say the grind crowd here now is a fair bit smaller than it was back when Condemned, Chamber 69 (RIP Mel Manyak) and Befall are still around. There is still a keen following but it has became significantly smaller over the last 3-4 years. There aren’t many people who listen to gore/grind and fewer who want to play it in a band. Still there have been some great bands like Repugnant, Noise Conspiracy Project, Commit Arson, Disabuse, Malicious Existence, Gunshot Wounds, Aggressive Dog Attack and Flash Elorde to name a few.  I just wish more people were playing fast music in Manila.
9. any last word.....
